Why can't some PS3 games be played on old tv?

I've tried playing games on both HD tv and the old one. Some games work on the old one like Marvel vs Capcom 3 and NBA 2K12. But others won't like infamous and Dragon age. How do I make them work on the old tv? Is there any settings on the display I have to adjust? Or is there really no alternative but and HD tv?
